Hedgehog Conservation

Since 2015, Solihull Council has supported the conservation of the UK's much loved prickly mammal. Their efforts began with a change in operation of how the mowing of verges in rural areas is managed, to make hibernation season safer for hedgehogs in the borough. This was followed by school visits alongside Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and their Hedgehog Improvement Areas campaign, to educate about the importance of habitats and corridors to allow the hedgehogs to thrive. A 220-acre reserve was created around Solihull's Elmdon Park by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust - thought to be the first of its kind in the UK, making Solihull the UK's first dedicated hedgehog conservation area.

Fast forward to 2024 and Solihull continues to show its support for the conservation efforts of the local hedgehog population. See our conservation highlights below!

Horace's Top Tips

A Happy Home

Log piles, leaf piles, wild corners and edges will attract natural food and offer shelter for hedgehogs.

Thirsty Hogs

Water is vital for all wildlife and can be scarce, especially during hot spells. Make sure there are always several clean shallow bowls of water in the garden for hedgehogs – pop a few pebbles in so that bees and butterflies can safely take a drink too.

Pond Watch

Ponds or pools are great for wildlife but do ensure there are escape routes – a sloping edge, ramp or half-submerged rock for hedgehogs to scramble out on.

All Tangled Up

Netting can become entangled in hedgehog spines: make sure sports nets are put away and garden netting is raised 30cm off the ground so hedgehogs can safely pass under.

Gardening With Care

Always carefully check for wildlife before mowing, strimming or lighting a bonfire pile. And don’t forget to leave a wild patch for them to inhabit with their other wildlife friends

Hedgehog Highway

Hedgehog highways allow vital access to more habitat; These 13cm x 13cm square gaps in the bottom of boundary walls and fences ensure hedgehogs can get in and out of areas such as gardens easily.

Don't Be A Litter Bug

Litter is a big problem for wildlife. Ensure you bin your rubbish or take it home with you, to stop hedgehogs from getting entangled.
